Abstract
The oil reservoirs in the Jurassic Badaowan Formation in the Chunhui Oil Field, Junggar Basin are mainly built up of a succession of coarse-grained clastic deposits including medium-to fine-grained conglomerates and gravelly sandstones. In this study, the provenance analysis is based on the heavy mineral method and stratal dip logs to determine the orientation and distribution of the dominant reservoir rocks. The NW-SE-trending increase of ZTR indices in the heavy minerals shows a NW-SE-trending migration of sediments, as indicated by the dip logs for several wells and the roundness of the proximal gravels in the Badaowan Formation. It follows that the principal source of detritus lay to the Halaalate Mountain in the northwest.
