New knowledge of the Bouma sequences

More Information
  • Published Date: March 29, 2010
  • The Bouma sequences have long been selected as the criteria for the recognition of classical turbidite sequences. The improvement of the research of the turbidites and deep-water gravity flow deposits in recent years has disclosed that the Bouma sequences are created not only by turbidity currents but also by other depositional processes such as the sediment gravity flows and tractional currents in the deep-water environments. Therefore, caution should be exercised in the application of the Bouma sequences as an indicator for the recognition of turbidites in the field.
