Basin modeling techniques and application of the BasinMod software

More Information
  • Published Date: June 29, 2010
  • Basin modeling has long been employed as an important technique in the exploration and assessment of petroleum basins. The BasinMod2009 software developed by PRA Corporation in 2009 is introduced in the present paper to the modeling of burial history by means of backstripping compaction method, thermal history with the aid of geothermal gradients method, hydrocarbon generation on the basis of the methods of hydrocarbon production rates and chemical kinetics, hydrocarbon migration and accumulation according to the loss patterns of the absorbed oil and gas in the migratory beds, and estimation of oil and gas resources in the light of expulsion-accumulation coefficients method. It can be seen that the newly-developed software has many advantages of planar, sectional and three-dimensional modeling of various basins.
